Supreme and County Courts
The Assigned Counsel Program represents individuals who have been indicted or are otherwise appearing in Supreme and County Courts for criminal matters. Upon assignment at the discretion of the Court, such matters can include post-conviction motions, petitions for writs of habeas corpus, and extradition and other proceedings. Attorneys may also be assigned to provide representation pursuant to Article 10 of the Mental Hygiene Law of New York State.
A special part of Supreme Court is known as the Integrated Domestic Violence, or IDV, Court. In the IDV Court, one Judge hears both the criminal case and whatever matrimonial or Family Court-type of case may also be pending between the defendant and another party. In these cases, the Program’s attorneys coordinate their representation and, in most cases, a client is represented in all such matters by a single attorney who is experienced in those areas of the law.
